Is there a time commitment?
Protecting and nurturing animal lives is our mission at MHS. For this reason, we require a monthly commitment of four hours, which is typically two shifts. Most volunteers come weekly. The commitment is for a minimum of six months. We depend on volunteers for much of our daily operation. Please note, we prefer to not have a large time lapse between volunteer shifts. We also feel it is important that MHS staff be able to recognize the volunteers and be able to depend upon them.
How old do you have to be to volunteer?

The minimum age to volunteer on your own is 16. Youth 13-15 years of age may volunteer if accompanied at all times by a responsible adult that also attended all volunteer trainingsAll volunteers under the age of 18 need a parent’s signature on their application and volunteer acknowledgement statement.

Specific volunteer opportunities for those 13-15 year olds are:

  • Cat socialization, as well as light cleaning of the cage is encouraged
  • Dog socialization for certain dogs on the adoption floor with parent present
  • Socialize and help with cleaning of small critters
  • Cleaning facility
  • Dishes
  • Laundry
  • Children who are 13-15 years old can walk dogs with a parent, but the parent must have the leash at all times.

Younger people often choose to help homeless animals at the shelter by having pet supplies from our wish list donated to the shelter in honor of their birthday or a special occasion. This creative and kind act is a wonderful way to give of your time and show support to the Humane Society. For a complete wish list, please go to http://midlandshumanesociety.org/donate/wish-list/.
